The reason Palestine and Lebanon withdrew from the 2023 Merdeka Cup was said to be because they are both in the Asian zone 2026 World Cup Qualification group.

Need to know
the Malaysian Football Federation (FAM) has confirmed that it will hold the 2023 Merdeka Cup. According to the schedule,
the 2023 Merdeka Cup will take place at Bukit Jalil Stadium, Malaysia, on 14-17 October 2023.

Previously, FAM had mentioned that there were already four countries that would compete in the 2023 Merdeka Cup.
There was also the Malaysia National Team as the host, there were also Lebanon, India and Palestine.

But recently, the Malaysian media with the Instagram account @malaysiafootballleague said Palestine and Lebanon withdrew from the 2023 Merdeka Cup.
The reason is, Palestine and Lebanon are in the same group for the 2026 World Cup qualification zone, namely in Group I.

Apart from Palestine and Lebanon,
Group I is also inhabited by Australia and the winner is between Maldives vs Bangladesh. Still according to the same source,
FAM will also prepare a replacement if one of the two Asian countries officially withdraws from the 2023 Merdeka Cup.
“Palestine and Lebanon are in the same group for the Asian zone 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

So, they withdrew from the Merdeka Cup (2023),” wrote @malaysiafootballleague, quoted on Wednesday (2/8/2023).
This is inseparable from the results of the Asian zone 2026 World Cup Qualification draw which was held, Thursday (27/7/2023).

Based on the draw,
Palestine and Lebanon were placed in the same group in the second round.
Both of them were joined in Group I with Australia and the winner of the match Maldives versus Bangladesh.

As is known, teams that meet in official events usually do not face each other in trial matches.
As a result, one of the two teams will most likely withdraw from the tournament.

However,
the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has so far not received any notification from the two teams.
This was disclosed by the Secretary General of FAM, Noor Azman Rahman.
“We are aware that Palestine and Lebanon are in the same World Cup Qualification group.”

“We haven’t received any news that the team in question will withdraw from the Merdeka Cup,” said Noor Azman.
The 2023 Merdeka Cup will be held at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium, which is currently under construction.
This is the first time the tournament has been held again after a hiatus of 10 years.

Meanwhile,
Malaysia joined in a relatively easy group in the second round of the 2026 World Cup Qualification.
Kim Pan-gon’s squad is in Group D with Oman, Kyrgyzstan and the winner of the Taiwan versus Timor Leste duel.
Oman is the lowest ranked team among the best Asian teams in Pot 1 (73rd in the world).

Then Kyrgyzstan is the second lowest ranked team (97 in the world) among the teams in Pot 2, only ahead of India.
Meanwhile, Taiwan (153) and Timor Leste (192) are still far below Malaysia (136) in terms of ranking.
Kim Pan-gon also admitted that his team was in an easier group compared to other groups.
