Palestinian teenager Faris Abu Samra Was Killed

Palestinian teenager shot and killed by Israeli troops.

Kabari99-Qalqilya, occupies the West Bank Although only 14 years old, Faris Abu Samra is “a man in every way”, said his father, Sharhabeel.

“He is older than his years. He is my colleague, my heart and the mastermind of the workplace,” Sharhabeel told Al Jazeera on Friday, a day after Israeli forces shot his son in the head during an attack in the West Bank city of Qalqilya,

Sharhabeel, a retired military trainer for the Palestinian police force, said Faris helped him sell fruit when he was struggling financially.

The third of six children,

Faris tries to get him to quit school to help his father.

“He told me, ‘I will help you, and we will solve all our financial problems.’ He is a man of his word because, indeed, I recognize that he is in charge,” said Sharhabil.

The Abu Samra family lived in a small house, but with Faris’ help, they were able to buy a piece of land.

“He used to point to a corner and say, ‘Here I will build my own house one day,’” recalls Sharhabeel.

Qalqilya, where Faris was shot, is in the northwestern part of the West Bank and much of Israel’s separation wall, a construction deemed illegal by the United Nations.

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health,

the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli soldiers since the beginning of this year has reached 202 people. At least 37 of them were children, he said.

Officials have warned that 2023 will be the deadliest year for Palestinians in the West Bank since the United Nations began tracking deaths in 2005.

 

 

 

 

 

 

‘Loved by everyone’
Fatima kept mentioning her younger brother’s name during the funeral procession on the same day Faris was killed.

“Faris, Faris, Faris,” said the 16 year old girl, screaming and crying.

Fatima tells how she found out about Faris’ death. She said she initially had hope when her neighbor told her brother.

“I am at home.

I took my phone and went online to check if had posted a video of the incident. Initially,

I saw a video with a boy on the floor with a lot of blood. It keeps lagging because our connection is weak,” Fatima told Al Jazeera.

“I thought, ‘I hope it’s not Faris.’ I waited patiently for the video to appear… Then I saw the paramedics resuscitate Faris,” he said. “I saw everything. There he is.”

Fatimah fell to the floor. Moments later, his mother, Samia Nazzal, 37, joined him.

“Faris came out to bring us food at night because we were supposed to be fasting,” Samia told Al Jazeera.

“He told me, ‘I want to have sahur with you, ma’am,’” said Samia, referring to the suhoor to start the fast.
